ATLANTA, Ga. -- For the third year in a row, the Christopher Newport women's basketball team earned a special mention in the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll after another exceptional campaign on and off the court. Released by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), CNU was recognized among Division III programs that earned at least a 3.0 combined GPA after the 2024-25 academic year.
As a team, the Captains combined for a 3.646 team GPA among the 18 rostered players. Headlining that group of impressive academic performances was five-time Academic All-Conference selection
Gabbi San Diego leading a strong assembly of 17 CNU players to garner Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference All-Academic plaudits. She joins an exclusive club of just three, with Sondra Fan and
Katy Rader, as the only five-time Academic All-Conference picks in program history.
Additionally, seniors
Hannah Kaloi and
Hannah Orloff hauled in the award for a fourth time and
Alexia Lindsey collected the recognition for a third time. Four Captains earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators as
Elizabeth Creed,
Sydney Sherman, and
Hailey Kellogg joined Orloff with the prestigious honor.
All players who were on the official team roster at the start of the second semester must be included in computing the team GPA. First and second semester hours are included, weighted on a 4.0 grade-point scale.
On the court, Christopher Newport finished the year ranked No. 14 in the WBCA Coaches Poll and No. 18 in the D3hoops.com national poll with a 26-2 overall record. The Captains extended a nine-year postseason appearance streak under head coach
Bill Broderick and captured a sixth consecutive conference championship. CNU ranked second nationally in bench scoring (43.5 ppg) and were among the highest-scoring offenses in the nation with 78.3 points per game ranking 12th in Division III. Additionally, the Captains stout defense continued to frustrate opponents with 16.3 steals per game, ranking 5th in the country, and 30.6 turnovers forced per game ranking fourth.
