NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 2025 NCAA Tournament Regional at Captains Park began on Thursday as top-seeded and second-ranked Christopher Newport University defeated Farmingdale State, 12-0, in five innings. The Captains improved to 36-4 on the season, and will next play Randolph-Macon College on Friday at 11:00 a.m. The Yellow Jackets, the second seed in the four-team regional, are now 35-11 after beating Alfred University in the second game of the day, 3-2.
Keith Parr's team exploded for eight runs in the third inning to blow open the game, as sophomore catcher
Natalie Quinlan and sophomore designated player
Simone Thompson homered during the frame that saw 13 Captains come to the plate. Quinlan's long ball, her ninth of the season, was a two-run shot, and Thompson slammed her third of the year, a solo shot, to lead the barrage of eight hits in the inning. Senior outfielder
Sammy Drew tripled down the leftfield line to drive in two runs later in the inning as the Captains pushed a 4-0 advantage to the 12-0 final verdict. The game was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Christopher Newport scored its dozen runs on 11 hits, with nine different Captains getting into the hit column. Sophomore centerfielder
Candace Slaw scored three times, and fifth-year senior third baseman
Brooke Greaver drove in two runs with a double and sacrifice fly, and now has 59 for the year and 168 for her career. Greaver is fourth all-time in RBI, and needs just two to tie Jessie Atkinson for third on the list. Drew and fellow senior, second baseman
Olivia Tullous, had two hits each for the Captains.
CNU starter
Jamie Martin threw three scoreless innings, striking out six, to earn the victory and improve to 16-2 on the season. Farmingdale State starter Madison DeMaio took the loss to fall to 23-8. The Rams, now 29-15, will play Alfred University (32-10) on Friday in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m.
The game was the second meeting ever of the two schools, with both coming in NCAA play at Captains Park. CNU defeated FSC, 12-4 in five innings, in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Christopher Newport is making its 18th straight NCAA appearance, and 22nd in the 41-year history of the program.
The Captains and Randolph-Macon met earlier this season and split a doubleheader in Ashland on April 4th. CNU presently holds a 23-9 edge in the all-time series, which dates back to 1999.
Tickets for Friday's games will be available beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a single day tickets for adults $10.00, and students/senior tickets at $5.00 and again will be cash only.
