Captains Sweep Senior Day Doubleheader over Mary Washington, 9-1 and 2-0, to Improve to 32-4

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University concluded its home regular-season schedule on Sunday, as the third-ranked Captains defeated the University of Mary Washington by scores of 9-1 and 2-0 at Captains Park. The Senior Day sweep left CNU with a 32-4 record, while the Eagles fell to 11-29 on the year.

The opening game saw the Captains explode for all nine of their runs in the third inning en route to the 9-1 triumph. The game was halted after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. CNU sent 13 to the plate, scoring nine runs on nine hits. The frame was started by back-to-back bunt singles by freshman Cora Thomas and sophomore Candace Slaw. Senior Brenna Morefield added an infield single to bring home Thomas with the first run of the game. Senior Sammy Drew delivered a run-scoring double, and sophomore Natalie Quinlan plated two more with a single up the middle to make it 4-0. Senior Olivia Tullous brought home another run with a sacrifice fly, and then Thomas returned to the plate and delivered the big hit of the inning. The first-year Captain hit a line drive to center that bounced in front of a diving defender, rolling to the fence allowing three runs to score on an inside-the-park home run to push the advantage to 8-0. Morefield later returned to the plate in the marathon inning, and smacked her second run-scoring single of the frame to make it 9-0.

Senior lefthander Jamie Martin threw the first four innings for CNU, and struck out seven while allowing just one unearned run and two hits. Martin upped her record to 14-2 with the victory, as senior Olivia Kim finished the game by throwing a scoreless fifth inning.

Runs were much harder to come by in the second game, as the Captains pushed across single runs in the third and fourth innings to hold off the Eagles, 2-0. Senior Kate Alger tossed the complete-game shutout to improve to 15-2 on the year. The Captains broke a scoreless tie in the third when Morefield scored Tullous with a sacrifice fly. CNU added another in the fourth when senior Reagin Luby scored Drew with a sacrifice fly as well and the two runs proved to be plenty for Alger, who gave up just four hits and stranded six Eagles on the base paths. The Captains posted seven hits in the nightcap, and stranded nine runners.

Prior to the game, 11 Captains were honored on Senior Day as they prepared to play their final regular-season home games. All 11 saw action in the twin bill on a sunny, breezy, and cool day at Captains Park, as Keith Parr's squad concluded the regular season with a 22-2 home record. The senior group has been a part of NCAA Tournament teams each year, including the Captains' first-ever National Championship in 2022. The group has compiled a team winning percentage of 89 percent over their careers as Captains. The 2025 season also marks the 25th in the 41-year history of the program the Captains have won 30 or more games.

Christopher Newport will conclude the regular season on the road next Saturday in Salisbury, Md., when CNU takes on the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. The twin bill is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Margie Knight Stadium.
