Captains Continue Softball Hot Streak, Sweeping North Carolina Wesleyan by Scores of 7-1 and 10-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University extended its winning streak to 13 straight games Wednesday, sweeping a softball doubleheader over North Carolina Wesleyan University at Captains Park. CNU took the opener, 7-1, and then followed with a 10-1 win in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. The Captains, ranked second in the nation this week, improved to 25-1 on the year, while the Battling Bishops fell to 14-12 with the losses.

Senior Sammy Drew drove in three runs in the opener, and five runs in all. She brought home the first run of the day with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning, and added two more with a third inning triple. Drew clubbed one of three CNU home runs in the nightcap, a two-run shot in the fourth inning that pushed the lead to the final of 10-1. Drew's home run was her fourth of the season.

Fifth-year senior third baseman Brooke Greaver also drove in five runs in the double dip, and crushed her ninth home run of the season in game two. Greaver, who was second in the nation in RBI coming into the game, scored runs in the opener with a ground out and a single, and then registered a three-run blast in the fourth frame of game two. Her home run was the 35th of her career, just two behind Patty Maye Ohanion for fourth place on CNU's all-time home run list.

Sophomore Natalie Quinlan also homered for the Captains on a cool and clear day at Captains Park. Quinlan posted her sixth home run of the year, a solo shot in the second inning of the nightcap.

Sophomore Candace Slaw, who leads the nation in hits and runs scored, had another impressive day, going four-for-six at the plate with four runs scored and four stolen bases. Slaw is now hitting .616 for the season, seventh-best in the country. The Captains stole nine bases in the twin bill, and have now swiped 74 on 87 attempts this season through 26 games.

CNU starters Jamie Martin and Kate Alger were the beneficiaries of the 17-run, 20-hit offensive attack. Martin pitched the opener, striking out 13 Bishops in six innings, and upped her record to 10-1 on the season. Martin's 13-strikeout performance gives her 487 for her career, just one behind Michelle Kass-Prewitt for second place on the school's all-time list. Alger, who is CNU's all-time strikeout leader, threw the first four frames of the nightcap, striking out five en route to the victory. Alger is now 12-0 on the year, and now has 528 for her career. For the day, CNU pitchers struck out 22 Bishops batters and did not allow a walk.

The Captains now lead the all-time series with NCWU, 69-25, and have won the last 13 games with the Bishops. Christopher Newport ended a 14-game home stand that saw them win 13 of 14, the lone loss coming to East Texas Baptist in the Cross Bay Bash.

The Captains will now play their next six games on the road beginning Friday, when they travel to Ashland, Va., to take on the 14th-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College. The first pitch of Friday's twin bill is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
