Jamie Martin and Kate Alger Throw Shutouts as Third-Ranked Captains Sweep Saturday Twin Bill at Lynchburg

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University got back-to-back shutout pitching performances Saturday, as the third-ranked Captains swept a doubleheader at the University of Lynchburg. CNU won the opener, 7-0, and then took the nightcap by a 2-0 margin. Keith Parr's squad is now 29-3, while the Hornets fell to 21-13 with the losses at Moon Field.

Senior lefthander Jamie Martin allowed just two hits in the opening game victory, and fellow senior Kate Alger followed by yielding just three hits in the second game. Both games featured outstanding pitching duels, as the Captains scored all of their runs in each game in the final two innings.

Martin locked up with Lynchburg senior Kailey Dorcsis to open the day, and both pitchers sailed through the first five innings without giving up any runs. The Captains finally broke the scoreless battle in the sixth frame when fifth-year senior third baseman Brooke Greaver brought home two runs with an infield ground ball. Senior outfielder Sammy Drew continued her hot hitting, adding a two-run home run later in the sixth to make it a 4-0 game. The long ball was the third in as many games for Drew, and her eighth of the season. The Captains would add three insurance runs in the seventh when sophomore Candace Slaw doubled home two runs, and Greaver brought home Slaw with an RBI single to account for the 7-0 final.

Martin improved her record to 12-2 on the season by going the distance, and giving up just two singles to the Hornets, one in the second inning and another in the fifth. Martin struck out three and walked four, stranding six Lynchburg runners on base. Dorcsis had her record fall to 11-6 with the loss.

In the second game, Kate Alger took the spotlight by hurling a complete-game shutout as well. Alger gave up just three singles, striking out one and walking one as she improved her record to 14-1 on the season. Alger was matched by Lynchburg starter, Emily Charlton, who held the Captains at bay through the first five frames before CNU put two on the board in the sixth. Senior Meredith Brickner delivered the key hit, scoring both runs with a single that brought home Slaw and senior Brenna Morefield with the game's only runs. Charlton fell to 7-6 with the hard-luck loss.

Christopher Newport will head to Roanoke, Va., on Wednesday to take on the Maroons of Roanoke College for two. The opening game is set to start at 3:00 p.m. CNU will then play its final home regular-season games of the season next Saturday, April 26th, when the Captains entertain the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington. It will be Senior Day at Captains Park, and pre-game ceremonies will begin at 12:45 followed by the start of the twin bill at 1:00 p.m.
