Captains Improve to 10-0 Following Victories Saturday in Raleigh; Kate Alger No-Hits NYU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University opened play Saturday in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C., by recording two victories over Arcadia and NYU. The Captains, now 10-0, defeated Arcadia in the opening game of the day, 10-0, in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. Keith Parr's team later downed NYU in the second game of the day, 4-0, as senior pitcher Kate Alger tossed a no-hitter.

The Captains, ranked seventh in the country, opened the day by overpowering Arcadia with a three-run third inning and a five-run fifth to close out the 10-0 victory. CNU posted ten runs on nine hits, and sophomore Candace Slaw recorded four of them, going four-for-four, and knocking in four runs. Slaw, CNU's centerfielder and lead off hitter, singled three times and also doubled and stole two bases. Shortstop Kendall Bentley and rightfielder Brenna Morefield each drove in two runs as the Captains wrapped up the win in just five innings.

Senior starter Jamie Martin was again fantastic in the circle, throwing the first four innings and striking out nine batters with no walks and just one hit surrendered. Martin improved her record to 5-0 with the victory.

Senior Kate Alger continued the pitching excellence in the second game of the day against NYU. Alger went the distance, allowing no runs or hits and striking out seven while walking two. She logged her fifth career no-hitter as a Captain. CNU starters Martin and Alger are now 9-0 with a combined earned run average of 0.15 through the first ten games of the season.

The Captains scored all the runs Alger would need with two in the third and two more in the fourth of the nightcap. Slaw opened the scoring with an RBI double in the third, and third baseman Brooke Greaver followed with a double to score Slaw. Catcher Mackenzie Sowonik's RBI single and Morefield's sacrifice fly produced the runs in the fourth for CNU.

Slaw finished the day six-for-seven at the plate with five runs batted in, three runs scored, and three stolen bases.

On Sunday, the classic will continue as Christopher Newport is set to play Berry College (Ga.) at 12 noon, followed by a battle with Methodist University at 2:30 p.m. CNU has taken two of three previous games with Berry, and has a 46-42 advantage in the long-running series with Methodist.
