ORLANDO, Fla. -- Senior
Raine Weis continued her outstanding start with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles, but the 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon Tartans (9-0) captured a 6-1 win against No. 17 Christopher Newport on a neutral court Friday afternoon. The Captains faced Carnegie Mellon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida as part of their Spring Break trip.
Weis paired with
Kylie Schaefer at No. 1 doubles and the duo took the best shot from Carnegie Mellon's pair, Anna Chow and Zoe Angell, but withstood the effort for a 7-6 (7-5) win. Weis and Schaefer are now 5-2 this Spring including three straight wins after Friday.
The Tartans captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 and then clinched the match with the first three singles wins at No. 2, 5, and 4. The other three matches were all played into the third set tiebreaker as Christopher Newport hung tough against the undefeated foe.
At No. 6,
Lindsey Bergelin opened her match against Manuela Van Cotthem at No. 6 with a 6-3 win in the opening set. Carnegie Mellon responded to win the bout by a final score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3, rookie
Kendal Chang took on nationally-ranked Ancele Dolensek and impressed with a second-set victory. She also forced 17 points to be played in the third-set tiebreaker before finally succumbing to a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) final score.
The lone CNU point came at No. 1 singles where Weis continued her flawless Spring season. Improving to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in duals, Weis took down Sarah Yang on the top line Friday. The pair played back-and-forth throughout the day in a match that took nearly three hours. Weis dropped a marathon first set, 7-6 (9-7), but remained unfazed into the second, bouncing back for a 6-3 win. In the tiebreaker, Weis outlasted Yang for a 10-8 win and put the Captains on the board.
With the setback, CNU is now 3-4 on the season. The Tartans improved to 9-0.
CNU will return to action on Saturday against North Central College. The Florida trip will then close against Grinnell College on Monday, March 10.
