No. 17 CNU Women's Tennis Shuts Out North Central College, 7-0

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team toppled North Central College (1-7) on Saturday afternoon with a marquee victory by senior Raine Weis in singles play, upending nationally-ranked Abigail Penados in straight sets. The Captains won, 7-0, as Weis continues her hot streak in this Spring by winning her seventh straight dual match including her third win against a ranked opponent. 

With the win, CNU improves to 4-4 on the season. 

The Captains swept all six singles matches and captured two of the three doubles bouts to earn the shutout victory, 7-0. In doubles, Samantha Robertson and Kendal Chang won at No. 2 against Kensington Payne and Liveta Ezerskis, 6-0; Eva Taylor and Erin Gross paired up for the win at No. 3 against Meghan McSweeney and Kate Herlihy, 6-0. 

WIth the doubles point secured, CNU quickly clinched the match with wins at 4, 5, and 6. Taylor had the decisive victory for her second win of the day. She Taylor captured a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 4 against Herlihy while Robertson surrended just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 versus McSweeney for her second win. Rookie Lindsey Bergelin also made quick work of her opponent at No. 6 singles, Anais Gerard, with a 6-0, 6-3 win. 

Rounding out a trio of multi-match winners was Kendal Chang as the freshman added a win at No. 3 singles to her No. 2 doubles win. Chang downed Ezerskis, 6-4, 6-4, to add to CNU's lead.

The final two matches featured exciting back-and-forth action as Kylie Schaefer edged her opponent, Payne, in a lengthy third-set tiebreaker. She finished off the win 6-2, 5-7, 14-12. Weis secured her nationally-ranked victory against No. 49 Abigail Penados after squeaking out a first-set win in a set breaker and cruising through the second for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win. 

CNU will close out the Spring Break trip to Orlando on Monday, March 10 against No. 27 Grinnell.
