NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University begins its journey in the NCAA Tournament Friday, as the 12th-ranked Captains host John Jay College at the Freeman Center in an opening round game. Tip off time is set for 6:30 p.m., and the game will follow the Roanoke/Pfeiffer match up, which is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. Friday's victors will advance to meet on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
The Captains are playing in their ninth consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament, the longest consecutive streak in the country, and the 28th all-time tourney in program history. Christopher Newport last year advanced to the round of eight, and two years ago won its first NCAA Championship in program history.
John Krikorian's squad received an at-large bid to the tournament after falling to Mary Washington in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference final last Saturday in Salisbury, Md. The Captains are 22-5, and will be playing the Bloodhounds of John Jay for the first time ever. John Jay, located in New York City, won the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) title this year and the Bloodhounds have a record of 19-8.Â
The Captains were 12-1 at home this season, and are 12-3 all-time in NCAA play at the Freeman Center.Â
Roanoke will be making its first NCAA appearance since 2001, when the Captains defeated the Maroons at the Freeman Center. Roanoke is 23-5 and a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The Maroons received an at-large bid to the tourney. Pfeiffer University has a record of 18-7 and won the championship of the USA South Athletic Conference. It will mark the first NCAA action ever for the Falcons in men's basketball.Â
Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Home of the Captains, Xtra 99.1 FM and CNUsports.com.
