NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Matching up against their sixth nationally-ranked opponent of the second semester schedule, the 17th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team grabbed three wins but suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 15 Case Western Reserve (6-0) on Friday afternoon. The Captains won at No. 1 doubles before earning wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
In pairs play, 15th-ranked
Raine Weis and
Kylie Schaefer outlasted their Spartan counterparts for a 7-6 (8-6) win on the top line. It came after CWRU had already clinched the doubles points with wins at No. 2 and 3, but the CNU duo improved to 7-3 at No. 1 doubles together this Spring.
Schaefer went on to appear at No. 1 singles for the first time in her career as the sophomore faced a formidable test in nationally-ranked Lily McCloskey on the top line. Schaefer battled in a back-and-forth affair but ultimately ceded a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision to the ranked foe.
Earning the first team point of the day for the Captains was
Eva Taylor, capturing a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against Anna Kan. She pulled CNU back within one, 2-1, on the team score, but the Spartans responded with three of the final four points. Christopher Newport added another win at No. 4 where
Samantha Robertson won by retirement in the third set. Robertson gave up the first set but rebounded with a 6-4 win in the second and was leading in the third set when her opponent, Asha Shukla, retired.
Christopher Newport falls to 4-6 with the setback and will return to action on Saturday afternoon to take on No. 37 Hope College. Match time against the Flying Dutch is set for 2:00 p.m.
