No. 17 CNU Women's Tennis Earns Ranked Win Over No. 37 Hope, 5-2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Three CNU players earned multiple wins on the day as the 17th-ranked Captains improved to 5-6 on the season with a 5-2 win over No. 37 Hope College (6-5). Sophomore Kylie Schaefer led the way with her first career win at No. 1 singles paired with a win at No. 1 doubles while rookie Kendal Chang and sophomore Samantha Robertson each won in both singles and doubles also.

The doubles point hung in the balance after the teams split at 2 and 3 before Schaefer and playing partner Raine Weis held off the top tandem from Hope College at No. 1 for a 7-5 win. CNU earned the win at No. 2 where Chang and Robertson paired up for a flawless 6-0 win over Hadley Krygier and Miyako Coffey. Then, Hope rebounded for a 7-5 win at No. 3. It came down to the top line where CNU's 15th-ranked duo held off Amanda Lopykinski and Sullivan Moran for the win and the doubles point.

Robertson kicked things off in singles play by dropping just a single game in her match against Coffey at No. 4. SHe earned a 6-0, 6-1 win for the Captains. Chang outlasted Lopykinski at No. 2 for a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win to pull CNU within one point of clinching the match.

Hope snagged wins at No. 3 and No. 4, but Erin Gross and Schaefer slammed the door on any potential comeback bid by the Flying Dutch. Gross played at No. 6 against Phoebe Walker and earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win. At No. 1, Schaefer handled the Hope freshman, Krygier, in three sets by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The Captains will return to action on Sunday against nationally-ranked Washington and Lee.
