CLAREMONT, Calif. -- In another top-25 showdown for the Christopher Newport men's tennis team, the match would hinge on the final three singles matches coming down to third-set tiebreakers. After clinching two of the three, the Captains improved to 6-1 with a 4-3 win over No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer in California.
The thrilling finish was set up by the Captains earning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. CNU also snagged the win at No. 6 when
Gabe Smith defeated Leo Rocca by a 6-0, 7-6 final, but Pomona-Pitzer took a 3-2 lead with wins on the top three lines.
All the while, the senior team captains,
Ashton Legum and
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen, were battling on their courts at No. 4 and 5, respectively. Legum took on Sam English at No. 4 and dropped his first set, 6-4. The CNU senior held off a pivotal team point in the second set by rallying for a 7-5 win in the seocnd set and then Legum ran away with the third set breaker, 6-0.
With the match knotted up at three points apiece, Porsmyr Hansen was locked in a duel against John Wehrle at No. 5. The Captains' leader won the first set, 6-4, but then dropped the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6. The clinching bout would be back and forth but Porsmyr Hansen pulled out the win to hand Christopher Newport the team's second straight win over a ranked opponent.
In doubles, CNU won the point with wins at 2 and 3. Legum and
Vincent Truong paired up for a 6-2 win at No. 2 against Ethan Lee and Neil Chulani. At No. 3, Porsmyr Hansen played with Smith and earned a 6-3 victory against Blake Bothmer and Jay Mallampati.
CNU will continue its trip to the Golden State on Tuesday, March 4 against No. 32 Chapman University.
