ORANGE, Calif. -- Playing in their fourth straight match decided by just a single point, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team battled against No. 32 Chapman before suffering a 4-3 setback on the road. The Captains fell to 6-2 on the season while the Panthers are now 1-1.
The hosts captured the doubles point with wins in two of the three bouts in pairs play. Christopher Newport earned the win at No. 2 doubles when
Ashton Legum and
Vincent Truong defeated Julien Sanseverino and Ian Jordan, 6-4.
In singles play, the Captains clawed back against the Panthers with wins to even the match at three points apiece. Legum picked up his second win of the day when he raced by Matt Dewey at No. 4, 6-0, 6-3.
Gabe Smith earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jordan at No. 6 and
Ryan Monroe kept his strong start to the Spring at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Mac Caldwell.
Monroe is now 6-1 in duals and 11-1 overall this season. Legum's win at No. 4 improved the senior to 3-0 on that line while keeping Christopher Newport perfect at No. 4 this Spring. CNU is now 8-0 with
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen also posting a 3-0 mark and Smith adding a 2-0 record.
The match would hinge at No. 5 where Porsmyr Hansen took on Lachlan Dickinson. After dropping the first set, the CNU fifth-year answered the start with a 6-4 win in the second. Forcing a third set tiebreaker to clinch the match, Porsmyr Hansen was back-and-forth with Dickinson before the match was decided in a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 final for the home team.
Christopher Newport will look to close out its Spring Break trip to California on Thursday, March 5 when the team takes on No. 19 Redlands. The match will begin at Noon.
