HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will head to Pennsylvania for a pair of battles this weekend as the Captains travel to Haverford on Saturday at noon before trekking to Swarthmore on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 4-3 on the season, including 3-1 on the road. Meanwhile, Haverford is 6-1 overall, and Swarthmore boasts a pristine 5-0 record.
For those fans unable to attend the games, live stats and video streams of both contests will be available. Direct links can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 16-6 setback against No. 4 Gettysburg on Wednesday. During the contest,
Madi Rozgonyi became the 22nd player in program history to eclipse 100 career ground balls, while
Hadley Chadwick pocketed a season-high 11 saves. On the offensive end,
Kate Lamendola and
Elena Sorkin collected two goals apiece, while
Page Henry and
Brookelyn Morrison also scored for the Captains.
Lamendola's eruption marked her third straight appearance with at least two goals, which stands as the longest run of her career. Incredibly, in just seven games, seven different Captains have already posted at least one multi-goal effort this year. Putting that into perspective, in 21 outings last season, nine players had at least one multi-goal performance, while eight reached that mark in 2022 and 2023.
CNU's attack has been helped by the team's success on free-position attempts. Overall this season, the Captains are converting 58 percent of their eight-meter shots, which ranks 29th in the country and leads the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference. Against Gettysburg on Wednesday, the squad had five free-position goals, which equaled the most in a single game since landing six against Kean on March 5, 2022.
Among the eight-meter conversions on Wednesday, Henry collected her first career free-position goal. The second-year standout has now found the back of the net in each of her last two appearances. Boding well for the weekend, she has also found continued success in the state of Pennsylvania. Although Henry has only played two previous games in the Keystone State, a quarter of her career goals have come in PA, while more than half of her strikes have come against Pennsylvania-based institutions. That success includes a pair of darts at No. 14 York (Pa.) as a freshman on March 27, 2024 and her first career hat-trick against Widener on March 13, 2024.
On the other side of the field, Haverford comes into Saturday's tilt after knocking off No. 23 Messiah, 16-10, on Wednesday. The Fords are led by Brooke Epstein, who ranks 17th in the nation with 24 goals and 20th with 33 points. As a team, the squad sits ninth in the NCAA in clearing percentage with a remarkable .904 conversion rate.
Equally impressive this season, Swarthmore is one of the nation's last remaining undefeated teams after moving to 5-0 with a 14-13 win over Skidmore on Monday. The Garnet sit fifth nationally in free-position percentage (.667) and 18th in clearing percentage (.883), while Brooke Carrier is 14th with a 5.93 goals-against-average.
In six previous meetings between the two programs, Haverford holds a 4-2 edge against the Captains, while Sunday's showdown will be the first battle between CNU and Swarthmore.
Following the road trip, Christopher Newport will return home on March 21 for a 3 p.m. tilt against Rowan.
