NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University improved its record to 4-0 on Wednesday, as the ninth-ranked Captains swept a doubleheader over Randolph College. CNU won the opener at Captains Park 8-0 in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. The Captains then built another 8-0 lead in the nightcap, but had to hold on for a 9-6 victory over WildCats. The games were the first home games of the new season for
Keith Parr's squad.
Christopher Newport used the long ball to supply nine of its 17 runs on the day, and the Captains hit four home runs in all. Sophomore
Natalie Quinlan got the scoring started with a three-run blast in the first inning of the opener, and fifth-year senior
Brooke Greaver drove in three runs of her own with a two-run double and an RBI ground out. CNU senior lefthander
Jamie Martin earned the victory in game one, improving her record to 2-0 on the season. Martin threw the first four innings, allowing no runs on just three hits while striking out seven WildCats.
The Captains would then slam three more home runs in the second game, building an 8-0 lead with four runs in each of the first two innings. Greaver opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first, her third of the season in just four games. The blast was Greaver's 29th career homer, matching Bailey Roberts for fifth place on CNU's all-time home run list. Senior shortstop
Kendall Bentley had the big hit of the second inning, crushing a three-run home run to make it 8-0.
Randolph avoided being put away in five innings by scoring twice in the fifth to make it 8-2. Sophomore
Simone Thompson added a solo home run for the Captains in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-2. The WildCats would make things interesting by plating four runs in the sixth inning, and they were able to do it with just one base hit. Addy Compton knocked in two runs with a single, and the other runs came home on a wild pitch and a ground out to make it 9-6.
Jamie Martin entered in the seventh inning of the nightcap, and picked up her first save of the season, retiring the side with three strikeouts to put the game away. Senior
Olivia Kim picked up the victory after throwing two scoreless innings for the Captains.
Sophomore centerfielder
Candace Slaw had four hits in six at bats in the twin bill. She scored four times and also stole a base. Greaver drove in five runs and has now posted 11 RBI in the first four games of the season. CNU stole nine bases in the doubleheader, with seven swiped in the second game. The Captains have now won all 13 games in the all-time series with Randolph, and the WildCats fell to 0-4 with the defeats.
Christopher Newport continues the season on Saturday at home, hosting the Spartans of York College of Pennsylvania. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
