LEXINGTON, Va. -- Playing the fifth-ranked Emory University Eagles (3-0) on a neutral court at the Duchossois Tennis Center on the campus of Washington and Lee University, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 setback on Sunday afternoon. Playing the match to completion, two of the singles bouts were left unfinished after a sweep by the Eagles in the remaining singles matches.
Emory earned the doubles points with two out of three in pairs play, but the Captains had a highlight with a win at No. 3 behind
Samantha Robertson and
Eva Taylor. Taking on freshmen Daniela Livson and Rachel Hernandez, the Captains' tandem earned a 6-3 win for their first victory as a pairing.
CNU nearly snagged the doubles point with a hard-fought battle against Izzy Antanavicius and Iris Berman but the Eagles junior pair held off
Raine Weis and Kylie Schaeffer for a 7-5 win.
The momentum-shifting victory was followed by three wins in singles play to clinch the match. Antanavicius won at No. 2 against Schaefer (6-4, 6-1), Berman defeated Robertson at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0), and Yanire Marte added a win over
Kendal Chang at No. 4 (6-4, 6-1).
On the top line, Weis battled against junior All-American Emily Kantrovitz before suffering a first-set loss in a tiebreaker. She trailed, 2-1, in the second set when the match was called. Weis was coming off a win over the 13th-ranked singles player in the nation and faced Kantrovitz,ranked No. 3 in the nation, less than 24 hours later.
Christopher Newport, who falls to 1-3 with the loss, will host its home opened this weekend against Methodist University at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 22. CNU will also welcome Averett University on Sunday for a 10:30 a.m. matchup.
