NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 17th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team cruised to its first win of the Spring season with a 7-0 blanking of Methodist University (0-2) on Saturday afternoon. The Captains rolled to a sweep of all nine matches against the Monarchs.
In doubles play, the Captains surrendered just a single game in the match with 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 wins in order. At No. 1,
Raine Weis and
Kylie Schaefer defeated Emma Hulicki and Caitlin Tihanovich; at No. 2,
Lindsey Bergelin and
Kendal Chang swept Annabelle Subirats and Katie Sechrist, and; the No. 3 match finished at 6-0 where
Samantha Robertson and
Eva Taylor defeated Veva Willocks and Madelyn Parker.
Moving into singles, the Captains gave away just eight total games in the six matches. The dominating performance started with a 6-0, 6-1 win by Weis over Hulicki on the top line. Then, matching 6-1, 6-0 wins at 2 and 3 came from Schaefer and Chang for Christopher Newport.
Samantha Robertson did not allow her opponent to score in a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, taking down Sechrist. Rounding out the total team effort was Taylor at No. 5, defeating Willocks 6-0, 6-1, and
Erin Gross capturing a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 against Parker.
CNU will return to action on Sunday as they host 37th-ranked Averett University at 10:30 a.m.
