No. 15 CNU Women's Lacrosse Begins 2025 Campaign at Lynchburg on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Live Stats // Video Stream

LYNCHBURG, Va. --
After making an appearance in the third round of the NCAA Tournament last year, the 15th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will open up the next chapter in program history on Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Captains kick off the 2025 season against Lynchburg at Shellenberger Field.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at LynchburgSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.

Following a 2024 season in which the program compiled a 14-7 record and advanced to the second weekend of the national playoffs for the first time in school history, the Captains were ranked in the top-20 in both national preseason polls this spring. Along with locking down the No. 15 position in the IWLCA National Coaches Poll, CNU was also slotted 16th by USA Lacrosse Magazine.

Christopher Newport features a pair of Preseason All-Americans as Brookelyn Morrison and Madi Rozgonyi both hauled in national recognition. Morrison established a new program record with 54 caused turnovers last year while also contributing 85 draw controls and 53 points. She was one of only 10 lacrosse players in the nation to record at least 50 points, 50 takeaways, and 50 draws in 2024.

Meanwhile, Rozgonyi anchors a veteran back line. The senior collected 21 takeaways last year while garnering All-Region recognition. Fellow fourth-year phenom Maddie Rusinko has also been a perennial starter since arriving in Newport News, while Carys May is the reigning Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.

Along with the field players, Christopher Newport also returns junior goalie Hadley Chadwick. In just two seasons with the Captains, she already ranks fifth in school history with 23 wins and seventh with 215 saves. Her 9.43 goals-against-average is also the sixth-best rate in program lore.

Overall, CNU welcomes back 11 players who cracked the starting lineup last year. Among those, Rozgonyi, Morrison, Chadwick, May, Kate Lamendola, and Gabby Saia started both games during the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Maelyn Eversole, Page Henry, Emilie Shoults, and Laci Welch are also back after earning starting assignments last spring.

Lynchburg is coming off of a 2024 season in which the Hornets posted a 10-8 record while advancing to the quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. Welcoming back three All-Conference performers from last year, the team was picked fifth in the ODAC Preseason Coaches Poll earlier this month.

Headlining the veteran portion of the roster, Meredith Bornholdt was a first-team All-League selection last year after posting 26 caused turnovers and 50 ground balls. On the other side of the field, Sydney Dumas and Neely Morris are back after picking up second-team accolades for their work on the attack. Dumas led Lynchburg with 52 goals in 2024, while Morris was second with 38.

In 20 previous meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport holds a 14-6 advantage in the series. Last year, CNU picked up a 19-4 win on the road. Morrison had a hat-trick for the victors, while Reagan Bradley had two goals for Lynchburg.

Following this weekend's battle, the Captains will remain on the road for a trip to St. Mary's (Md.) on February 22 at 1 p.m.
