NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Saturday marks the final home game of the regular season for the Christopher Newport University men's basketball squad. The 12th-ranked Captains host the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington on Senior Day, with tip off set for 6:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
John Krikorian's squad has won five straight contests and ten of its last 11. The Captains are 19-4 and have won 11 of 12 games at home this season. The Eagles come into Saturday's battle with a record of 10-12 on the year. Pre-game ceremonies will honor three Christopher Newport University seniors;
Jamaal Madison,
Christian Wilson, and
Jahn Hines.
CNU had to come from behind on Wednesday night at the Freeman Center to defeat Salisbury University, 67-65. After trailing for most of the night, the Captains finally pulled ahead with just over five minutes to go and held off the upset-minded Sea Gulls. Fifth-year senior All-American
Jahn Hines led the way with 14 points, followed by junior
Collin Hines' 13-point effort. Sophomores
Toa Hollenbeck (11) and
Ryan Derderian (10) scored all of their combined 21 points in the second half to help fuel the comeback.
Mary Washington is coming off a victory on Thursday night at Eastern Mennonite University, 83-71. The Eagles have won their last two, and three of their last four games. The game will be the 48th in the all-time series with Mary Washington. CNU has won 40 of the first 47 battles, and the Captains have won the last 12 games in the series. CNU is 21-2 all-time vs. the Eagles in games played in Newport News.
Tickets for the game will be available Saturday at the Freeman Center Ticket Office prior to tip off. Christopher Newport games are broadcast live on the Home of the Captains, Xtra 99.1 FM and CNUsports.com. Christopher Newport will play its final regular season game one week from Saturday, February 22, at Mary Washington. Tip off time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Fredericksburg. The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament will be played at Salisbury University's Maggs Center with the semi-finals on February 28th and Championship game on March 1st.
