Jessica Dornak Hauls in Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference announced on Monday that Christopher Newport junior forward Jessica Dornak was named the conference Player of the Week for women's basketball. Dornak helped lift the nationally-ranked Captains (11-2) to three wins this week with a road victory at Virginia Wesleyan (61-56) before a pair of wins at home against York (Pa.) (70-50) and Catholic (81-73).

The wins extended the Captains' win streak to nine straight this season while also matching the fourth longest home winning streak in program history with 15 in a row. CNU is now 11-2 overall this season as they head into the holiday break this week.

Dornak was a big part of the CNU success this week as the Reston, Va. native was named the MVP of the Nelson Hinson Invitational hosted by the Captains this weekend. In the two home wins, Dornak averaged 11.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game while shooting an impressive 73 percent from the field (8-for-11). She was limited due to foul trouble at Virginia Wesleyan but still managed to score six points, haul in three rebounds, and block a pair of shots.

In a thrilling 81-73 win against Catholic, Dornak came up with a pivotal blocked shot against the Cardinals that helped CNU lock up the win at home. In a third-quarter flourish led by teammates McKenna Snively and Hailey Kellogg, the Cardinals tried to go inside against Dornak but she denied the shooter with a heavy-handed block and rebound that set the Captains loose on a fast break the other way. Following the bucket, the Captains had re-taken a five-point lead and never surrendered the advantage again.

Finishing with 12 points, Dornak recorded the second back-to-back double-digit scoring performance of her career. She narrowly missed a double-double with a season-high eight rebounds and added a couple of blocked shots. Against York (Pa.), Dornak finished with 10 points in 11 minutes played on 5-of-6 shooting. She again was a terror on the glass, grabbing seven rebounds for a 40-minute pace of 25 boards.

This season, Dornak is averaging a career-high 5.4 points and 5.2 rebounds while starting 11 straight games in the front court. She is one of the most efficient scorers on the team, knocking down 48.3 percent of her attempts from the field.

With her first career player of the week certificate, Dornak is the third different CNU player to be recognized by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference as Women's Basketball Player of the Week this season as she joins Madison McKenzie and Sarah Pritz

Christopher Newport will return to action in Florida at the St. Pete Classic hosted by Eckerd College on December 29-30. CNU will first take on Wellesley College for the first ever meeting between the two programs at 11:00 am on December 29. Then, on Tuesday, December 30, the Captains will take on the Bears from WashU, ranked No. 18 in the nation, for the first time at 1:00 p.m.
