Christopher Newport just made the trip to the Eastern Shore of Maryland last weekend for their last game where they closed out a scoreless draw against the host Sea Gulls. The result extended a five-game unbeaten streak heading into the postseason tournament that included four straight wins before the tie at Salisbury.
Led by three-time defending Coaching Staff of the Year headed by
Jamie Gunderson and assisted by
Sean Killion and
Brian Lybert, the Captains featured seven All-Conference selections and eight total players recognized by the league in the postseason awards. Senior midfielder
Hanna Heaton was named the C2C Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year and freshman defender
Addy Hennessy was named the C2C Rookie of the Year.
Offensively, the Captains are averaging 1.75 goals per game while being led by Heaton with 18 points (7g, 4a) and senior forward
Molly Seventko with 11 points (4g, 3a). Junior
Alex Devers has added four goals and
Lexi Hazelgrove also has eight points on three goals and two assists.
Defensively, CNU continues to boast one of the nation's elite back lines with only five goals allowed through 16 regular season games. Since Gunderson took the helm in 2021, the Captains have allowed just 37 goals in 106 games for an unthinkable 0.345 goals-against average. In goal for the majority of those games has been junior goalkeeper
Amy Sidaway, who ranks third nationally among all active players in goals-against average over the course of her career with a 0.39 mark. The back line includes senior
Kyleigh Gough, junior
Bella DiTommaso, and rookies Hennessy and
Malayah Warner.
Salisbury earned a 1-0 double overtime win against Johnson & Wales - Charlotte in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Lauren Chesney picked up the winning goal in the 103rd minute for the Sea Gulls. This season, the Salisbury offense has been balanced with Jordan Edwards (4g, 1a) and Ava Wheeler (2g, 5a) leading the way with nine points apiece.
The winning team will advance to the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championship game on Sunday, November 9 at 10:00 a.m.
