Barry and Tharrington Receive Weekly Football Honors as Captains Move Up to 12th in Coaches' Poll

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University received two weekly awards on Monday from the New Jersey Athletic Conference following the Captains' 49-42 home victory over Montclair State on Saturday. Junior quarterback Connor Barry was selected the Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time this season, and freshman running back Drevyon Tharrington was named the Offensive Rookie of the Week for the third time.

Barry, from Vienna, Va., threw four touchdown passes and  ran for a score as the Captains recorded their 13th consecutive victory dating back to last season. The junior completed 15 of 19 passes for 209 yards, and has now thrown for a single season school record of 30 scores this season with just two interceptions.Barry connected with senior Colin Hart on a 56-yard bomb in the second quarter, and also threw two scoring passes to freshman tight end Fred Cowell IV and one to junior tight end Ethan Barham.

Tharrington, a product of Granby High School in Norfolk, Va., led the Captains in rushing with 73 yards on ten carries. The freshman was called on to carry the ball five times on the final possession, picking up two first downs, and rushing for 53 of his game-high 73 yards to help preserve the victory.

The Captains will host Salisbury University this Saturday in a battle for first place in the NJAC. It will be Senior Night at TowneBank Stadium, and the Sea Gulls, ranked fourth in the new coaches poll and seventh in the D3football.com poll, are also 8-0 and 5-0 in the NJAC.
