SALISBURY, Md. -- Middle blocker
Alyssa Dozier had 18 kills, eight coming in a pivotal third set, and freshmen setter
Fielding Croft added 47 assists as CNU defeated Salisbury University 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 25-17) for its season-high fifth consecutive victory.
It was the Captains' seventh win in their last eight matches. CNU hadn't won in the Sea Gulls' Maggs Physical Activities Center since 2021, snapping a run of four straight road losses at Salisbury.
Dozier had a hitting percentage of .455 and added five solo blocks.
Simara Alexander finished with 11 kills followed by
Samantha Dorn with nine (.571).
Simone Schaefer and
Emmy Carpenedo had eight each.
Maddie Hanes led the Captains (13-6) with 15 digs. In addition to her 47 assists, which followed a CNU freshman record 60 last weekend at Washington and Lee, Croft also had 12 digs for her third career double-double.
Neither team led by more than four points in the opening set. The eighth and final tie came at 18-18, and CNU took the lead for good on a kill by Croft.
That began a 3-0 run, which included a kill by Alexander, that helped the Captains put it away. Carpenedo sealed the first set with an unassisted kill.
Salisbury (15-5), which came in riding a six-match winning streak, never trailed in the second set. CNU hurt itself with seven service errors and a .167 hitting percentage.
In the third, the Captains looked to be pulling away with a 20-14 lead on a kill by Carpenedo. The Sea Gulls responded with a 6-1 run to cut the Captains' lead to 21-20.
CNU answered with a 4-1 run with three of its points coming on kills by Dozier, including the clincher.
The Captains closed it out with an efficient fourth set in which they hit .344. CNU's lead was a slim 17-16, but it scored eight of the set's final nine points for the win.
These teams will meet again next weekend in the Coast-to-Coast Invitational in the Freeman Center.
The Captains will return to the court Friday night at home against Randolph-Macon College of the ODAC at 5 p.m.
