Christopher Newport Volleyball Sweeps Randolph-Macon for Sixth Straight Victory

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Back in the Freeman Center for the first time in nearly two weeks, CNU volleyball extended its winning streak to six consecutive matches with a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-21, 25-14) over Randolph-Macon College Friday night.

Samantha Dorn led the Captains (14-6) with 11 kills on a .588 hitting percentage and three aces. Alyssa Dozier and Simara Alexander had 10 and nine kills, respectively, and combined for eight blocks.

Setter Fielding Croft finished with 35 assists, two aces and a kill. Maddie Hanes had 12 digs.

It was the Captains' eighth win in their last nine matches, six of which have come in straight sets.

Randolph-Macon (11-5) led twice in the opening set, the final time at 5-4. CNU pulled away with a 7-0 run and took a 23-13 lead on Avery Hanly's ace. Dorn's fifth and final kill of the set put it away and gave the Captains a 1-0 lead.

Dozier had had four kills as CNU hit .407 with only two attack errors.

The Captains never trailed in the second set, but the Yellow Jackets forced a 20-20 tie with a 3-0 run. After a timeout, CNU scored four consecutive points, two coming on kills by Dorn and Alexander and one on an ace by Croft.

Alexander clinched the 25-21 set win with a kill off Croft's 14th assist of the set.

CNU put the third set away with an 8-2 run (two kills each from Dorn and Alexander) that made it 14-6.

CNU will have the rest of the weekend off before hosting the Coast-to-Coast Invitational, which begins next Friday afternoon in the Freeman Center.

The Captains will compete against UC Santa Cruz (Friday, 6 p.m.), Mary Washington (Saturday, 2 p.m.) and Salisbury (Saturday, 6 p.m.). CNU defeated Mary Washington 3-0 and Salisbury 3-1 earlier this month with both wins coming on the road.
