NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- CNU volleyball kept its winning ways moving forward with a 3-0 win (25-12, 25-14, 25-20) over UC Santa Cruz Friday night on day one of the Coast-to-Coast Invitational in the Freeman Center.
Senior middle blocker
Alyssa Dozier led a balanced offense with 11 kills (.588) and four blocks for 15 points. Freshman outside hitter
Emmy Carpenedo had eight kills and four aces for 12 points.
Juniors
Simara Alexander and
Samantha Dorn had six kills each. Freshman setter
Fielding Croft assisted on 31 of the Captains' 34 kills. Libero
Maddie Hanes had a team-best 13 digs.
CNU (15-6) outscored the Banana Slugs 13-0 on service aces.
In the opening set, the Captains took the lead for good at 2-1 on a kill by
Phoebe Adams. Dozier had four kills and three blocks while Alexander had three and one.
In the second set, the Captains used an 11-3 run to turn a 5-5 tie into a 16-8 lead and rolled from there.
Dozier and Carpenedo had three kills apiece in the set, and Alexander and Dorn had two each.
The third set was tighter with and six ties and three lead changes, the final coming when a Banana Slug attack error gave the Captains a 13-12 lead. CNU sealed the set, and the match, on a kill by Dozier with the assist from Croft.
The C2C Invitational will resume Saturday with the Captains playing the University of Mary Washington (6-17) at 2 p.m. and Salisbury University (19-5) at 6 p.m. The Captains defeated both teams earlier this month by scores of 3-0 and 3-1, respectively.
