No. 5 CNU Men's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Playing on the road for a fifth straight game, the fifth-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team was locked in a grueling back-and-forth matchup at Mary Washington before both teams settled for a 0-0 draw. The Captains are now 7-1-3 on the season while Mary Washington is now 6-5-1 following the tie.

The CNU defense continued to flex its proverbial muscle in 2025 with the team's third shutout in the last four games. In addition to standing tall against a high-powered Eagles offense, the Captains defense also cleared two shots off the line to help secure the clean sheet.

In goal, senior Hayden Dewey made three saves, including a game-saving diving stop in the first half versus a one-on-one breakaway. In the 23rd minute, Jack Sturman got free for the home team and drove into the box before shooting on frame with only Dewey to beat, but the CNU netminder made a sensational stop.

On the other end, the Captains took eight shots and put three on frame. Colin Skwirut opened the action in the 14th minute with a shot on goal and Joe Summerfield challenged the Mary Washington keeper, Tristan Kickbush, with an early rip in the second half. The final shot on goal for CNU came off the foot of freshman Nick Dunkley in the 68th minute.

With his 10th career shutout, Dewey joins the top-ten all-time at Christopher Newport and is the first CNU player to reach the mark since Zach Pedini logged 10 clean sheets from 2015-18. He also now ranks ninth in career saves with 148, passing Chris Fazio (1982-83) on the all-time list.

Christopher Newport will conclude a six-game road trip on Wednesday, October 8 as the Captains travel to Washington and Lee University. Kickoff against the Generals is set for 3:00 p.m. in Lexington.
