Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 20 Christopher Newport Plays to Stalemate at Washington and Lee, 0-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- For the second straight game against high quality competition, the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw as the Captains (7-1-4) traveled to Washington and Lee University for a mid-week afternoon matchup on Wednesday. The Generals are now 4-2-5 after the tie, which featured nine shots for both teams.

The teams got the matchup started with a frenetic pace with a couple hard tackles resulting in cautions in the first ten minutes -- one on each side. The home team controlled much of the early offensive action, including a shot on-goal from Spencer Furman in the eighth minute that Hayden Dewey stopped for CNU.

The Generals had several chances in the box early on, but the CNU defense weathered the initial burst. Josh Monzon, Declan Karney, Carson Friedlein, and Yazen Yaghmmour turned away the first-half action on the back line while Miles Maggioncalda also stepped on to fill in for the final 18 minutes.

In the middle of the period, junior Colin Skwirut made back-to-back stellar defensive stands that saved the CNU defense from a building Washington and Lee chances. Once, he made a clean tackle in the box that eliminated a passing opportunity and again in the midfield, he sacrificed his body with a tough challenge to reverse the direction of the ball.

After a wave of substitutions late in the half, the Captains took control in the final 15 minutes including a nice shot from senior Caleb Jones that was on frame. Yaghmmour added a hard rip that sailed wide and a last-minute corner kick did not result in any more shots for CNU.

The momentum carried into the second half where CNU pressured the Generals keeper with several early chances. Joe Summerfield took the first shot of the period with a laser wide right and Manzi Siibo followed with another rocket on target that was stopped by W&L.

On the other end, the defense continued to stand tall as the back line made a save off the line after a shot got behind Dewey, helping secure the shutout. Dewey made his second save of the night on a shot in the 68th minute on what proved to be Washington and Lee's last opportunity on net.

In the final 20 minutes, the nationally-ranked CNU squad ratcheted up the action moving forward, including a last minute surge that saw the Captains nearly break the tie in the final ten seconds. Senior Asher Kuzemka had his first attempt blocked by a defender and Michael Hackworth followed through on the rebound with another blast that skipped just outside of the goal mouth.

The final stats were even with both teams taking nine shots with three on-goal for each. CNU took three corner kicks and held W&L to none.

Dewey picked up his 11th career shutout and tied Nolan Mann (2012-15) and Allan Livingstone (1987-90) for sixth all-time at CNU.

It marks the third time in the last seven matchups that the two teams have finished a game in a draw. The series has featured a 1-1-2 record between CNU and Washington and Lee over the last four.

The Wednesday afternoon tilt was the last of a six-game road trip and CNU will return home for three of the next four. The Captains will host Regent University on Senior Night this Saturday, October 11 at 6:00 p.m.
