Lily Kerr Sets Career Wins Record as No. 1 CNU Field Hockey Shuts Out No. 13 York (Pa.), 2-0

YORK, Pa. -- Lily Kerr established a new program record with her 55th career victory, while Lindsey Loar and Caroline Hughlett landed a pair of goals as the top-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team shut out No. 13 York (Pa.), 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field.

Helping anchor a defensive masterpiece, Kerr added another chapter to her historic tenure with the Captains. The All-American goalie improved to 55-7 during her career, moving past former legend Bailey Lien for the most victories in school history. Her 55 wins are also the most among all active goalies in the NCAA and rank 22nd on the all-time Division III charts.

Fittingly, Kerr reached the milestone while producing another clean sheet. Saturday's victory was her 22nd career shutout and her 15th triumph against a nationally-ranked foe. Both of those totals also rank first in program lore.

Chipping in with her own historic footnote, Hughlett scored her eighth career goal against a top-25 opponent. That moved her past longtime legend Haylie Black and current assistant coach Maddison Steele for the most by a Captain. Meanwhile, she also converted her fifth career penalty stroke, which elevated her over former standouts Sarah Wister and Alexa Weaver for the second-most in school history.

Rounding out Saturday's heroes, Loar opened the scoring with her sixth goal of the year, tying Emily Evans for the team-lead. It was also her fifth career game-winning tally and her second clincher of the season.

With the win, Christopher Newport improved to 10-0 for just the third time in school history, while the setback dropped York (Pa.) to 5-5.

In the opening quarter, CNU controlled the action while keeping the ball planted on the offensive side of the field. Just over a minute into regulation, Hughlett backed her way into the circle and earned a corner before Ellie Nuckols weaved through traffic and secured a second opportunity on the right side of the arc. Although the Captains were unable to capitalize on the initial push, Christopher Newport never let York flip the field.

Building a blockade on the defensive end, Kendall Gibson picked off a roller near the center stripe before Morgan Shealer handled a pair of aerials along the right sideline. Moments later, Kelly Via came away with a quick strip near the edge of the arc to stymie a deep rush that saw several Spartans leaking into the circle.

Following the defensive stand, CNU picked up the pressure. In the 13th minute, Gigi Stephan threaded a needle through a crowd before Brylee Johnston grabbed the feed and stormed into the circle. Burning past a pair of Spartans, she wiggled free on the interior, but her ensuing shot was bottled up by a back-line defender near the left post.

Still pushing forward, Hughlett stripped a midfielder, stopped on a dime, and spun a pass through two Spartans along the 25. Taking possession, Loar dashed into the circle, pulled up, and launched a one-timer from the top of the arc to grab a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.

Looking to retaliate, the hosts mounted their finest rally in the waning moments of the opening quarter, but Christopher Newport stonewalled the surge. After York generated a corner, Nuckols applied immediate pressure and forced a pass, which Courtney Hughlett gobbled up on the left side. Although the Spartans were able to maintain possession, Hughlett plucked another spinner before Shealer took control and slipped a pass to Johnston, who burst up the right sideline to help cap off the stanza.

In the second period, York tried to build on its momentum with a pair of quick corners, but CNU stood tall again. On the first attempt, Nuckols and Courtney Hughlett double-teamed a shooter at the top of the arc before Via bolted in and deflected a dart from behind. Then, on the second try, Hughlett drove an attacker towards the right baseline before her sister caught up to the play and cleaned up the action to prevent any damage.

Later in the frame, the Captains kept a tight lid on the hosts while tossing a blanket over the turf. Preventing York from moving the ball past midfield, Caroline Hughlett picked the pockets of a Spartan along the left sideline, Hailey Ward brushed aside a push near the opposite boundary, and Avery Mast tied up an attacker in the center of the turf to keep the 1-0 lead entering halftime.

Following the break, Christopher Newport nearly broke through on an early rush in the third quarter. Off a corner, Loar snaked her way around two defenders at the top of the zone before finding Kate Engle near the right pipe. Although she was cut off by a defender, the freshman served the ball back towards the center of the zone where Loar and Via pounded away. Unfortunately, York managed to survive the scare before clearing the zone.

On the opposite end of the turf, the Spartans orchestrated their own rally, but CNU stepped up again. This time, Via dipped low and blocked a pass along the edge of the arc before Courtney Hughlett caused an attempt to sail wide with tight pressure on the inside. Moments later, Mast snatched a roller and circled through a scrum before firing a seed up the right sideline, which put an end to the rush.

With time winding down in the quarter, the Captains picked up the tempo. Keeping the ball pinned on the offensive side, Nuckols and Ward did fantastic work along the boundary to prevent the Spartans from flipping the field. Eventually, the pressure paid off as Christopher Newport collected back-to-back corners in the 44th minute.

On the second attempt, Via barreled in and positioned herself down low. Working in tight quarters, she redirected an initial shot at the right post. Although a defender handled the deflection, Via regained control of the ball, pulled to her left, and lifted a floater towards the opposite pipe, which caught the shoulder of a second Spartan and earned CNU a penalty stroke.

Taking the free shot, Caroline Hughlett stepped to the dot and rifled a screamer into the bottom right corner for a 2-0 advantage.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the visitors nearly struck again. On an early surge, Johnston orchestrated an outstanding run while cutting through a crowd at the top of the zone. After slipping free, the freshman connected with Stephan, but her shot was stopped by York's keeper on the doorstep.

Following CNU's push, the Spartans went back to work with numbers on their side. After the Captains were hit with a card, the hosts garnered a corner in the 49th minute. Unfazed by the situation, Nuckols confronted a shooter at the top of the circle. With little room to maneuver, the Spartan tried to elevate the shot, but the attempt was too high to do any damage.

Still playing 10-on-11, Shealer and Caroline Hughlett blocked a run along the left side of the zone before Shealer intercepted a dangerous roller just inside the arc. Later, after returning to full strength, Via was glued to a shooter and thwarted a pair of attempts before Courtney Hughlett stole a pass in the right corner.

Entering the final minute of regulation, York pieced together a last-ditch rally in the hopes of avoiding a shutout. Off a corner, Nuckols raced out to the edge of the arc and forced a pass, which Courtney Hughlett deflected on the interior. Shortly thereafter, Loar swiped possession from an attacker and scurried up the right sideline to help polish off the victory.

Overall, Christopher Newport held a 13-1 advantage in shots and a 10-5 lead in corners.

The Captains will be back in action on Sunday when the team returns home for a noon battle with Rhodes at Jennings Family Stadium.
