No. 5 CNU Men's Soccer Continues Road Trip With Matchup at Mary Washington Saturday

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team is set to continue a six-game road swing on Saturday afternoon as the Captains (7-1-2) take on Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. at 1:00 p.m. CNU will look to bounce back after a loss for the first time in 2025 while taking on the familiar foe from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference riding a three-game winning streak and posting a 6-5-0 record so far this year.

The matchup at Roy Gordon Field at the Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg is the fifth straight away from home for the Captains who are coming off a 2-0 setback at No. 20 Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night. The game is the 60th between the two programs and the series is locked in a 26-26-7 draw heading into Saturday's action.

A live video webcast will be available, free of charge, courtesy of the University of Mary Washington Athletics Department. A link to the stream can be found on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.

The Captains have surged into the top five of the NCAA Division III rankings after a seven-game winning streak, marking the longest run since 2017. Six CNU players have been in the starting lineup for all ten games so far this season including defenders Carson Friedlein, Josh Monzon, and Declan Karney. Midfielder Colin Skwirut and forward Drew McWhinney round out the field players while senior goalkeeper Hayden Dewey has started and played all 900 minutes for CNU between the pipes.

The defense has allowed eight goals in ten games for a 0.80 goals-against average while logging four shutouts. CNU has allowed more than one goal in a game only twice while the offense has found the back of the net in all but two games so far. McWhinney leads the attack, scoring three goals for six points, while Friedlein has helped add six points out of the back line with two goals and two assists.

Mary Washington, the top-ranked team in the nation for the majority of the last season, started the 2025 season ranked No. 9 in the nation. The Eagles stumbled with four straight losses and dropped out of the poll, but the talent remains for the C2C foe as the team has bounced back with three multi-goal performances to rally for a three-game winning streak. Veteran forward Sammy Amorose leads the Eagles with 13 points on four goals and five assists while junior Elliot Berg has added 12 points on five goals and two assists.

After the matchup against Mary Washington, the Captains' six-game road trip will come to a close after CNU travels to Washington and Lee next Wednesday, October 8 at 3:00 p.m.
