LEXINGTON, Va. -- Having won four of its last five matches, each coming in straight sets, Christopher Newport University will head to Lexington for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The Captains (10-6) will begin play at 1:30 p.m. against Averett University (2-10) in a neutral court matchup before taking on the host and 15th-ranked Washington and Lee Generals (13-2) at 4:00 p.m.
CNU is 48-35 against the Cougars in a series that dates back to 1983. The Captains have won 23 consecutive matches against Averett. Prior to the matchup with CNU, the Generals will be coming off a Friday night home match against Guilford College.
Last season, the Captains faced Washington and Lee three times last season including a win on the road against the nationally-ranked opponents. CNU has a 23-17 advantage in the series, which was last played in the 2024 NCAA Regional Championship in Newport News. Christopher Newport is 10-5 on the road against the Generals and have won five in a row against Washington and Lee in Lexington with the last loss coming in the 2009 season. This will be the Captains' sixth match against a top-25 team this season.
Christoper Newport is coming off a sound 3-0 win over Mary Washington Wednesday night in Fredericksburg. CNU had a season-best hitting percentage of .430, its highest since the 2015 season. It was the third time in five matches the Captains hit .405 or better.
Alyssa Dozier led CNU with 11 kills (.409) and
Emmy Carpenedo added 10 (.474).
Avery Hanly had six (.667) along with two assists.
Freshman
Simone Schaefer had a career-high four kills, all coming in the third set, including the clincher at match point.
For the season, Dozier continues to lead the Captains in kills (145, 2.96 per set) and blocks (59, 1.20).
Samantha Dorn is second in both categories with 122 kills (2.30 per) and 24 blocks (0.45 per).
Fielding Croft leads the team in assists with 341 (6.20 per) and service aces with 21 (0.38).
Megan James is first in digs with 2.88 per set followed by
Maddie Hanes (2.78).
Of note: With 854 kills, Dorn needs 13 more to move into 20
th place on the program's career list. A junior, she is currently 11
th all time in kills per set at 2.84.
