FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team wrapped up the second day of the 2025 ITA Southeast Regionals on Friday after competing in nine doubles matches and a dozen in singles play.

Rookies Nathan Russell and Jamison Wallace impressed in the B1 and B2 draws, respectively, playing into the semifinals. Russell earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Moravian's Shayaan Farhad in his first singles matchup and then outlasted Joshua Kim from Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals 7-6 (8-6), 6-1. In the B2 draw, Wallace had an eventful Friday with a pair of wins in lengthy battles. First, he took down Nathan Arnold from Franklin and Marshall 7-6 (11-9), 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) and, then, he advanced to the semis with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory against Sahil Arora from Johns Hopkins. 

The two newcomers will play in the semifinal round on Saturday with a chance to win their draws with two wins. 

In the championship draw, senior Vincent Truong captured a win to advance to the Round of 16, but suffered a setback to fourth-seeded Asher Willenborg (Salisbury) to conclude his run. Truong toppled Rian Merchant (Carnegie Mellon) in the Round of 32 by a score of 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8). 

Playing in the back draw of the championship bracket, Nesh Kumaresan won twice, dropping Evan Fisher (Mary Washington) and Corey Beshoar (Bridgewater) by 8-4 and 8-5 finals. Gabe Smith also won twice -- the first by walkover -- with an 8-7 (9-7) win against Brian Yi (Johns Hopkins). 

Before the singles matches, the Captains saw impressive success in the doubles draws. Kumaresan and Smith are still playing in the championship draw after winning twice on Friday. First, they took down a pair from Lynchburg, Ricards Spaks and Patricio Zepeda, 8-2; then, they earned an 8-4 win against Eli Campbell and Cooper Lehman from Mary Washington. The CNU tandem will take on third-seeded Dylan Blenkiron and Brian Yif rom Hopkins on Saturday morning. 

Russell played with Alex Seretis and split a pair on Friday while Christiansen and Wallace also went 1-1 on the first day.
