FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Christopher Newport women's soccer team went on the road Tuesday evening and captured a convincing 3-0 win on the road at Methodist University. The Captains have now won 13 consecutive games against the Monarchs after scoring twice in the first half and one more after the break.
The Captains controlled the majority of the action in the first half but would not light up the scoreboard until there was just over five minutes remaining. Then, within moments, the lead doubled.
Hanna Heaton scored her team-leading seventh goal to kick off and was quickly followed by a the first goal of the season for
Brooke White.
Heaton scored her second straight game-winning goal in the 40
th minute with just over five minutes remaining. A 50-50 challenge in the middle of the field bounced the Captains' way when a deflection saw the ball squirt beyond the Methodist defense with Heaton sprinting through. She had no one in front of her except the goalkeeper and, once she entered the box, played a perfect touch left of the netminder to open up the goal for a layup.
The senior All-American from Gloucester, Va. moved up to seventh all-time on the CNU scoring chart in just three seasons with the Captains. She scored her 28
th career goal and, when paired with her 27 career assists, now has 83 career points to slide past Emily Renkin (35g, 12a) with 82 points from 2004-06.
The second goal came just over a minute later when the Captains took advantage of a foul in a dangerous are near the top of the 18-yard box. White, appearing in just her second game of the season, stepped up to the free kick from just inside 25 yards away from the goal. On the whistle, White delivered an absolute bullet to the upper 90, beyond the outstretched arms of the Methodist goalkeeper, doubling the Captains' lead.
Scoring two goals in just 1:11 of game time, it marks the second time in three games that Christopher Newport has gone back-to-back in less than 90 seconds. The Captains also scored twice in 0:59 against Virginia Wesleyan last week.
CNU outshot the home team, 13-4, in the first half including a 6-2 edge in shots on-goal. In the second half, the Captains' advantage continued to grow with a 9-2 difference after the intermission. Over the course of the game, CNU took 11 shots on goal while holding the Monarchs to just three. CNU also took 11 corner kicks in the game while holding Methodist to just two.
Capping the three-goal outburst was a score in the 69
th minute of play. The play started after a beautiful long ball up the left side from outside back
Bella DiTommaso was able to spring
Katy Bronski free beyond the defense. The Methodist goalkeeper was forced to come out to defend Bronski and the savvy senior centered a pass to her teammate flanking her all the way up the field,
Alex Dalakis. With an open goal, Dalakis needed just one touch to slam in the third goal of the night.
Defensively, junior
Amy Sidaway made three saves in 76 minutes of action before giving way to senior goalkeeper
Abby Ochs for the final 14 minutes. Ochs added to her impressive career shutout streak, stretching over 450 career minutes without allowing a score. She is the only CNU goalkeeper to appear in 10 or more games without ever surrendering a goal.
A total of 27 players were able to log at least 10 minutes of action in the game for head coach
Jamie Gunderson in an impressive show of depth. Eleven of those 27 registered at least one shot, led by
Alex Devers with five and
Grace Shifflett with four. DiTommaso and senior
Kyleigh Gough played 90 minutes for the CNU defense, helping stymie the Methodist attack throughout the game.
Christopher Newport to 12-1-2 overall this season including a 4-0-1 record as the visiting team. The Captains, who moved up to No. 12 in the nation in Tuesday's United Soccer Coaches national rankings, have won four in a row.
CNU will close the regular season at Salisbury University next Saturday, November 1 at 1:00 p.m.
