No. 14 CNU Women's Soccer Picks Up 11th Shutout of the Season in 0-0 Draw at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. -- The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team continued to flex its defensive mettle on the road with a fourth straight shutout away from home as the Captains played to a scoreless draw at Salisbury University (5-10-5) on Saturday afternoon. It marked the 11th shutout overall this season as the nationally-ranked Captains saw its record move to 12-1-3.

Christopher Newport has leaned on junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway throughout the season and the veteran netminder came up with six saves on Saturday. She needed to make three stops in each half, including a pair within a minute with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. In a late flourish of opportunities by the Sea Gulls, Sidaway stopped two more in the final 15 minutes of the game.

With her ninth solo shutout of the season and playing in her 11th overall, Sidaway has now 31 by herself and nine combined clean sheets in her career. That ties her with all-time leader Haley Eiser (2018-19, 2021) for the most shutouts played in at goal with 40. She also pulls within one solo shutout of Eiser for the most in CNU history.

It was the 55th start of Sidaway's career as the Shelby Township, Mich. native tied Meghan Gumbs for third all-time at CNU. She now trails only Eiser (65 starts) and Carly Maglio (61 starts) in CNU lore.

Playing in front of her and helping secure the shutout were senior Kyleigh Gough, junior Bella DiTommaso, and rookies Nora Cook and Addy Hennessy. Gough, DiTommaso, and Hennessy all played full time while Cook saw action in over two-thirds of the match. Also helping lock down the Salisbury attack in the midfield was Avery Spell

The Captains took 18 shots in the game, led by five from Alex Devers. Hanna Heaton and Gough each logged a pair while Grace Shifflett took three total attempts including two on-frame.

Christopher Newport will return to the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex next week for the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. Official seeding and a tournament schedule will be announced by the league office shortly with CNU next expected to play in the C2C Semifinals on Friday, November 7.
