NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- For the second time this season a pair of Christopher Newport men's soccer players have swept the weekly Conference Player of the Week awards from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Named the Offensive Player of the Week for competition from October 13-19 was senior
Barry Jones while senior
Asher Kuzemka was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
The Captains played in just one game this week and captured a 1-0 win against Salisbury University in the contest. With the win, CNU improved to 9-1-4 overall with a .786 winning percentage.
Kuzemka played one of his finest games as a Captain as the All-Region star commanded the midfield unit in the shutout effort against the Sea Gulls. He helped neutralized the Salisbury attack while holding the Salisbury offense to a season-low two shots on-goal in the game. Kuzemka and the rest of the CNU defense gave up just seven total attempts from the field.
On the other end, the senior team captain started the play on the game's lone goal-scoring run when he passed ahead into the box for an assist on
Barry Jones' game-winning goal. His pass threaded the needle to the corner of the box for
Joe Summerfield, who provided a highlight-reel heel flick into the middle for Jones to come through and score the goal.
Jones scored the only goal of the week to pick up the win for Christopher Newport. He became the seventh different player to score a game-winning goal this season for the Captains with his third strike of the year. Jones now ranks second on the team in scoring with six points while he continues to be deadly accurate from the field. The senior midfielder has taken 11 shots this season while putting seven on frame for a .636 on-goal percentage.
Both Kuzemka and Jones earned their first career weekly honor from the C2C. This year, they join
Hayden Dewey, a two-time Defensive Player of the Week,
Yazan Yaghmmour, a one-time Defensive Player of the Week, and
Drew McWhinney, an Offensive Player of the Week pick on September 22.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday at North Carolina Wesleyan University. The Captains will kickoff against the Battling Bishops at 4:00 p.m.
