ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- With another dominant defensive performance on the road, the 19th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team shut out North Carolina Wesleyan (6-8-1) on a mild fall afternoon at Scalf Field as the Captains captured a 2-0 win.
Joe Summerfield scored the gamewinner in the first half and
Drew McWhinney added an insurance tally in the second half to secure the road victory and improve to 10-1-4 overall on the season.
It marked the fifth time in six seasons under head coach
Justin Chezem that the Captains have reached a double-figure win total. It was the 11th straight victory against N.C. Wesleyan in the all-time series as Christopher Newport improved to 26-18-8 against the Battling Bishops.
Standing tall against the Bishops, the CNU defense held the home team to just three total shots in the game.
Hayden Dewey snagged his eighth shutout of the season while the back line eliminated the majority of the potential scoring opportunities before the Bishops could even get into the box.
Carson Friedlein,
Ben Sullivan, and
Yazan Yaghmmour played full time while
Declan Karney was off the field for just 90 seconds in the clean sheet. The quartet gave up just two shots on goal in the game.
With the opposing attack bottled up, the Captains were free to build their own movement toward the N.C. Wesleyan goal. In the first half, Christopher Newport was limited to just three shots, but jumped out to an early lead when Summerfield connected in the eighth minute of the match. Off a feed from Karney, Summerfield found the back of the net into the high right side of the goal.
It was the third goal of the year for Summerfield with each holding up as the game-winning goal. He also notched winners at Hardin-Simmons and Marymount earlier this year.
In the second half, Christopher Newport wore down the N.C. Wesleyan defense even further, doubling the shot count and finishing the game with nine total attempts from the field. CNU put five of those nine shots on-goal and also worked for five corner kicks.
Giving the Captains a little more breathing room, McWhinney slipped in his team-leading fourth goal of the season into the right side off a feed from
Michael Hackworth. The score came in the 62nd minute and provided CNU with an insurance tally against the Bishops.
With the win, Dewey notched his 26th career victory in goal for the Captains and took over sole possession of seventh all-time at CNU. He trails Allan Livingstone (1987-90) for sixth on the all-time charts with 28.
Christopher Newport returns to action in one week's time as the Captains host Mary Washington on Wednesday, October 29 at 6:00 p.m. The game will be the penultimate game of the regular season as CNU will close out the 2025 campaign at Salisbury University on Saturday, November 1 before hosting the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament from November 6-9.
