FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The 2025 ITA Southeast Regional Championships got underway on Thursday with singles action being played in the Championship Draw. With 64 players slotted in the main draw, the first round was played at the University of Mary Washington outdoor courts and three CNU players earned victories on the opening day. 

Seniors Vincent Truong and Barrett Foster, both seeded #9 in the championship draw, earned opening round victories, while sophomore Rainer Christiansen also picked off his first opponen to advance to Friday's Round of 32. 

The most dominant victory of the day came at the hands of Truong, who made quick work of Dickinson's Lucas Bogle. Truong dropped just a single game in the straight-set victory, coming away with a 6-1, 6-0 win. 

Newcomer Barrett Foster took down Jorge Urgal from Washington College (Md.), also in straight sets. Foster captured a 6-3, 6-3 win on day one and will compete in Friday's second round against Carnegie Mellon's Takeshi Koey at 11:30 a.m. 

Rounding out the first round victories for Christopher Newport was Christiansen, who outlasted Swarthmore's Hayes Gilbert in a third-set tiebreaker. Christiansen surrendered the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3), but bounced back to roll to a second set win, 6-2. In the tiebreaker, the two players were back and forth before the CNU second-year earned a 10-8 win. 

Two more CNU players were entered into the championship draw as Gabe Smith and Nesh Kumaresan suffered losses on Thursday. Smith fell to Carnegie Mellon's Daniel Kong (6-3, 6-4) and Kumaresan gave up a tough one to Mukundh Boopathi from Johns Hopkins (3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7)). 

Like Foster, Truong will return to Singles action at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow morning against Carnegie Mellong opponent as he will face Rian Merchant. Christiansen will continue his run in the main draw against #5 seed Dylan Blenkiron from Johns Hopkins. 

Friday will also open play in the remaining draws as well as commence doubles action. At 8:00 a.m. the Captains will see Nathan Russell and Alex Seretis play together in the Round of 64, as will Kumaresan and Smith. Seeded #5, Foster and Truong earned a first-round bye and will play their first match at approximately 9:30 a.m. Christiansen will play with rookie Jamison Wallace at 8:00 a.m. against a pairing from Washington and Lee.
