Arlington, VA. - The Christopher Newport Volleyball team split two matches on Friday. The Captains beat the hosts, Marymount, after dropping the opener to Heidelberg.
Heidelberg 3, Christopher Newport 1 | (25-18, 17-25, 28-26, 25-22)
First Set
Christopher Newport started strong, winning seven of the first nine points against Heidelberg. Freshman
Avery Hanly recorded two early kills, finishing the set with four.
Macy Burk led the way with six kills, including a crucial swing to bring up set point.
Samantha Dorn closed out the set for the Captains, sealing a 25-18 victory.
Second Set
Heidelberg rebounded in the second set, despite CNU's efforts that tied the score at 11 after kills from Burk and Alyssa Dozier. Heidelberg regained control and managed to hold off the Captains down the stretch, taking the set 25-17 and evening the match score.
Third SetÂ
CNU appeared in control early in the third set, building a 12-6 lead with three aces from
Audrey Stenger and another from
Phoebe Adams. However, Heidelberg mounted a comeback, tying the score at 24 before edging out the Captains in extra points, 28-26.
Fourth SetÂ
The final set was tightly contested, with neither team gaining more than a three-point advantage until Heidelberg secured a 22-18 lead. CNU responded by taking three consecutive points to get within one, but Heidelberg regrouped to close out the set 25-22 and win the match.

First Set
The Captains had a chance to win a very close first set, with
Alyssa Dozier delivering two kills to tie the score at 24-24. Dozier was dominant early, finishing the first set with seven kills, but Marymount managed to string together two points in a row to win 29-27 and take the opening set.
Second Set
CNU stormed back in the second set, erasing a five-point deficit. Senior Noelle Starr served three consecutive aces during a stretch that saw the Captains win nine of 10 points and take a 13-11 lead. The Captains' defense came alive with four blocks in the set, and Dozier's kill made it 23-20 before Phoebe Adams hammered back-to-back kills to secure the set 25-21, evening the match score.
Third Set
The third set remained close, with a Marymount error tying the score at 20-20. Each team missed a serve, keeping the score tied at 21. Dozier's kill gave the Captains the lead, but two straight points by Marymount put them ahead 23-22.
Samantha Dorn responded with a kill to tie the score, and
Alyssa Vitale served an ace to bring up set point. Dorn came through again with a clutch kill to win the set 25-23 for CNU.
Fourth Set
The Captains' blocking continued to shine, as they added three more in the fourth set. After trailing 13-8, CNU rattled off five straight points, powered by kills from Dozier and Dorn and a block from Vitale and Dozier. The Captains found themselves down 17-20 but scored six of the next seven points to take a 23-21 lead. Marymount committed two attacking errors to give CNU the final two points, sealing the 25-22 set win and the 3-1 match victory.
