No. 5 CNU Women's Soccer Hosts UT Dallas and Ohio Northern at Captains Field This Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team is back in action this weekend as the Captains will host the University of Texas at Dallas (0-0-0) at 5:00 p.m. on Friday evening before welcoming Ohio Northern University (1-0-0) for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff on Sunday. The Captains are 1-0-1 after the first weekend after extending the second longest unbeaten streak in NCAA Division III history to 69 games.

Led by a pair of dominant defensive performances, the No. 5 CNU women's soccer team recorded back-to-back shutouts to start the season with a 0-0 result against No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan and a 1-0 win over Shenandoah. CNU has now has held opponents scoreless in 15 of the last 17 games dating back to September 20 of last season.

Senior All-American Reanna Slater hauled in C2C Defensive Player of the Week recognition for her role in leading the Captains' stingy defense and has been flanked by Nyah Savage and Bella DiTommaso through the first two games this season. Jaya Daniel and Amy Sidaway each got a start in goal and both players needed to make just two saves to secure the clean sheets.

While the defense continues its historic level of prowess, the CNU offense picked up a game-winning goal from sophomore Alex Dalakis off a feed by AP Webb. Hanna Heaton, with 10 shots, and Emma Ricci, with 7 shots, leads the team in total shots this season while both have put three on target.

The matchup on Friday evening against the Comets will be the first ever against UT Dallas and CNU will be taking on Ohio Northern for just the second time in program history. The Captains won the first matchup last season on a neutral field, 2-1, to take a 1-0-0 lead in the series.

For fans unable to attend in person, a live video stream and live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. Links can be found on the women's soccer schedule or the composite calendar online.

UT Dallas will be opening their season against the Captains after a busy exhibition schedule that included a 1-1 draw agianst UC Santa Cruz on Sunday. In that game, Chelsea Vilca scored a goal and joins the Comets after two seasons at Seminole State College where she scored 35 goals and had 11 assists.

Ohio Northern notched a season-opening win, 3-0, against Rose-Hulman while being led by Elizabeth Pierce with a pair of second-half tallies. Alyssa Beckett scored the winner in the 60th minute before Pierce scored twice to pull away from the Fightin' Engineers.

Following the weekend at home, Christopher Newport will travel to North Carolina for a neutral site tilt against Emory University, receiving votes in the preseason coaches poll, on Saturday, September 14.
