CNU Volleyball Sweeps Doubleheader with Haverford

Haverford, Pa. - Christopher Newport finished off a perfect weekend on Saturday with two wins over Haverford. The Captains dropped just one set between the two matches and set a new season high in kills to win their second match of the day.

Christopher Newport 3, Haverford 0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20)

First Set

After falling behind early, the Captains used a five-point run, powered by three kills from Samantha Dorn, to erase Haverford's lead. Dorn continued to be the offensive spark with five kills in the first set, helping CNU close strong by winning six of the last seven points. Megan James chipped in with three late kills to secure the first set.

Second Set

CNU carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead, led by three more kills from Dorn. The Captains maintained their lead until Haverford fought back to trail by just two points at 17-15. But CNU responded with an 8-3 run to close out the set. Macy Burk had a kill and an ace to start the run, and Dorn kept it going with three more kills before James clinched the set with a final kill.

Third Set

The Captains started the third set strong again, but Haverford battled to take a 16-13 lead. CNU responded with nine straight points, including two kills from Avery Hanly, two from Simara Alexander, and a pair of aces by Audrey Stenger. Two more kills from Kyla McIntyre set up Burk for the match-winning kill.

Christopher Newport 3, Haverford 1 (26-24, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15)

First Set

The opening set was tightly contested, with the score tied at 20 after a kill from Avery Hanly. Samantha Dorn put the Captains ahead, followed by an ace from Audrey Stenger. Megan James added another ace to bring up set point, but Haverford responded with three straight points to tie it at 24. CNU quickly regrouped to win the final two points on kills by Macy Burk and Alyssa Dozier, taking the set 26-24.

Second Set

Trailing 9-8, CNU used a dominant 9-1 run to take control of the second set. Alyssa Dozier led the way with four kills during the stretch, while Hanly added two more, and Dorn served her second ace of the set. Haverford closed the gap late, but Dorn finished off the set with three kills to secure a 2-0 lead for the Captains.

Third Set

CNU served well in the third set, with Alyssa Vitale serving three of the team's four aces. The Captains led for most of the set until Haverford mounted a late rally to tie it at 24. Haverford capitalized by winning the final two points to take the set and force a fourth.

Fourth Set

CNU took firm control in the fourth set, racing out to an 11-4 lead, sparked by three early kills from James. The Captains hit an impressive .433 in the set, with James finishing with six kills while Burk and Dorn added four each. James also served an ace as part of the final four-point stretch that sealed the victory for CNU.
