Christopher Newport won the opening match of this weekend's road trip on Friday night, knocking off Eastern 3-1.
First Set (Captains 27-25)
Despite an early lead, the Captains found themselves tied at 23-23 after
Noelle Starr delivered her third ace of the set. Eastern earned two set points, but CNU fought back and won the final three points.
Alyssa Vitale landed a timely kill to tie the score, then teamed up with
Macy Burk for a block before setting up Burk for the decisive kill to claim the first set.
Second Set (Eastern 25-21)
CNU started strong with three early kills from
Avery Hanly, but Eastern fought back, hitting .265 in their best set of the match. Trailing 22-17, the Captains rallied with four consecutive points, including a kill and a block from
Alyssa Dozier, cutting the deficit to one. However, Eastern held firm, winning the last three points to even the match.
Third Set (Captains 25-21)
Eastern's 9-2 run gave them a narrow 18-17 lead late in the third set. But the Captains responded, winning six of the next seven points with kills from
Samantha Dorn,
Macy Burk, and
Alyssa Dozier. Dorn and Hanly came through with back-to-back kills to close out the set in favor of CNU.
Fourth Set (Captains 25-18)
Eastern started strong in the fourth, but CNU answered with a seven-point run to erase the early deficit.
Samantha Dorn sparked the surge with three consecutive kills and added a fourth during the run. Later,
Noelle Starr served back-to-back aces, while Burk hammered three kills to finish off the set and secure the match for the Captains.
