Cambridge, MA - Christopher Newport volleyball fought hard and took No. 10 MIT to five sets, but fell 3-2 on Saturday at the Boston Invite. The Captains are the first team to take MIT to five sets in the regular season since Swarthmore on October 6, 2023.

First Set

MIT claimed the first set 25-17, despite strong efforts from Macy Burk and Alyssa Dozier, who each recorded four kills. The Captains stayed close, but MIT pulled away with two late kills to take the early lead.

Second Set

CNU responded in the second set, hitting .308 as Burk opened with two early kills to set the pace. Megan James added three crucial kills, turning an 11-10 MIT lead into a 19-14 advantage for CNU. James' fourth kill brought up set point, and Noelle Starr delivered an ace to seal the 25-21 win.

Third Set

The Captains were on fire in the third set, posting an incredible .536 hitting percentage. Avery Hanly and Burk each had five kills, with Burk playing a key role in a late 5-1 run. Aces from Audrey Stenger and James helped propel CNU forward, and back-to-back kills from Samantha Dorn and Dozier secured a 25-17 set victory.

Fourth Set

Dorn's five kills in the fourth set kept the score tight, and the Captains were within reach after tying the set at 21-21. An ace from Alyssa Vitale put CNU ahead briefly, but MIT fought back to win the set 27-25, forcing a decisive fifth set.

Fifth Set

In the final set, kills from Dozier and Burk tied the score at 12-12, but MIT regrouped during a timeout and scored the final three points to clinch the match 15-12.

News & Notes

Macy Burk had a career-high 17 kills to lead the Captains. The Fifth-Year also had a career high of 24.5 points thanks to a team-best eight blocks.
Alyssa Vitale finished the match with a double-double composed of 40 assists and 16 digs.
The Captains had 13 blocks on Saturday, their most this season. Alyssa Dozier and Avery Hanly added four blocks each to Burk's eight.
