Christopher Newport wrapped up their opening weekend on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 4 ranked Johns Hopkins at the Freeman Center.
First Set (Johns Hopkins 25-16)
The match started with a bang as
Macy Burk delivered an ace to give Christopher Newport an early spark. Freshman
Avery Hanly added three kills in the first set, but a late five-point run by Johns Hopkins swung the momentum, allowing the Blue Jays to take the first set.
Second Set (Johns Hopkins 26-24)
Johns Hopkins opened the second set strong, scoring six of the first seven points. The Captains fought back valiantly, with three kills apiece from
Macy Burk and
Avery Hanly, tying the score. Trailing 23-22, CNU rallied to tie the set at 24, but Johns Hopkins managed to edge out the Captains, scoring the final two points to claim the set.
Third Set (Johns Hopkins 25-22)
Christopher Newport came out firing in the third set, jumping to an 8-3 lead with key kills from Hanly,
Alyssa Dozier, and an ace from
Noelle Starr. However, Johns Hopkins mounted a comeback, eventually tying the score at 19 and even taking a three-point lead. Kills from Hanly and setter
Alyssa Vitale brought the Captains back to a 22-22 tie, but the Blue Jays closed out the set and match by scoring the final three points.
2024 Captains Classic All-Tournament Team
Juniata led the way with three All-Tournament selections including MVP Kennedy Christy. She was joined by teammates Sky Rousset and Olivia Foley. Johns Hopkins boasted a pair of All-Tournament team picks in Jilienne Widener and Evelyn Bautista. Rounding out the 2024 version of the All-Tournament Team was CNU junior All-American
Alyssa Dozier. Dozier was also named to the All-Tournament Team in 2023 becoming just the second two-time selection for CNU in the last four seasons joining former CNU great and current assistant coach
Sammy Carroll. Sky Rousset also earned her second pick after earning a spot in the 2022 event.

Christopher Newport heads north to Arlington next weekend for another weekend tournament. The will face Heidelberg and the hosts, Marymount, on Friday, September 6th before Saturday's match against Schreiner.
