NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Kicking off a run of eight straight home games on the 2024 schedule, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will welcome Rosemont College and Stockton University to Captains Field this weekend as part of the 5th Annual Steve Shaw Classic. The Captains, receiving votes in the preseason national rankings, will first take on Rosemont at 6:00 pm on Friday night before turning around to take on Stockton on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all the action. Links can be found at the top of this page or on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
On Friday, the Captains and Ravens will match up for just the second time after CNU earned the inaugural win on November 12, 2022 in the NCAA Tournament opening round. The Saturday bout set against the Ospreys will be the seventh matchup all-time as CNU holds a 5-1-0 all-time record coming in.
The Steve Shaw Classic is named in honor of the long-time CNU Men's Soccer head coach who led the program from 1996-2018. Shaw established himself as one of the finest coaches in the nation by compiling an overall record of 319-110-36 during his tenure. Named the NSCAA Region Coach of the Year four times, Shaw helped guide Christopher Newport to nine NCAA Tournament appearances and was at the helm when the men's soccer team became the first of any sport in CNU history to earn a number one national ranking when they accomplished the feat in 2009.
This season, CNU is returning its three leading scorers from a year ago with fifth-year senior
Mason Field, sophomore
Drew McWhinney, and senior
Barry Jones pacing the attack. Field finished with 18 points on nine goals while McWhinney's rookie campaign saw him scored 14 points with six goals and two helpers. Jones, an All-Region selection, was among the league leaders in assists with eight and finished the season with 10 points.
Rosemont returns the 2023 United East Defensive Player of the Year in Tai Torres along with several first team All-Conference honorees. After reaching the conference championship, the Ravens closed out the year with an 11-4-3 overall record. Stockton scored 11 wins in 2023, marking the highest number of wins since 2017, and will start the season ranked third in the NJAC preseason coaches poll. Junior Aiden Hoenisch leads the offense after ranking third in the league in points last season.
When the whistle blows to start Friday night's game against Rosemont, the Captains will officially have begun the 50th season of men's soccer in CNU Athletics history. Christopher Newport is set to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the program on Saturday, September 21 against Rowan University. The Captains will invite back over 500 alums to celebrate the milestone on a special night at Captains Field.
Following the opening weekend, Christopher Newport will host Concordia University Texas and Widener University on September 6-7.
