Christopher Newport split its previous two outings during a trip through Ohio last weekend. The Captains dropped an 11-7 decision to Denison on Saturday before bouncing back with a 21-10 triumph over Kenyon. During the two games,
Syd Guidi led the Captains with 10 points after posting back-to-back five-goal eruptions. The fourth-year phenom now has five straight hat-tricks.
Along with Guidi,
Kelsey Winters handed out seven assists, including the 250th of her career. She became just the fifth player in the history of collegiate lacrosse to reach that milestone and only the second to do so in Division III.
Sloane McDonald also reached a milestone during the win over Kenyon on Sunday. Against the Owls, she registered her 100th career point, becoming the 27th Captain to reach that benchmark.
In addition to the offensive standouts,
Julia Iapicca contributed five takeaways during the two games, while
Brookelyn Morrison had four. Between the pipes,
Hadley Chadwick added 15 total saves. Her eight stops against Denison equaled the second-highest total of the year, while her three ground balls against the Big Red matched her season-high.
So far this season, Winters leads the NCAA with 47 assists, while she ranks 12th with 62 points. As a team, the Captains are 22nd in the nation in shooting percentage with a .513 mark. Among players with at least 10 attempts, freshman
Page Henry leads the squad with a .600 rate after converting nine of her 15 shots into goals. Fellow first-year standout
Emilie Shoults has also connected on each of her two rips this year, while Guidi leads the high-volume scorers with a .585 shooting percentage after sinking 38 goals on 65 attempts.
Rowan was last in action on Thursday when the Profs dropped an 11-7 decision at Stevenson. Leading by a pair at halftime, the visitors were undone by a five-goal run by the Mustangs in the third stanza. Elaina Corson posted a hat-trick during the game, while Katie Montenero had four takeaways on the defensive side. Mel Rodgers also contributed 14 saves during her time in the crease.
Overall this season, Rodgers ranks 20th in the NCAA with 105 saves and 22nd with a .505 save percentage. Meanwhile, Molly Green has forced a team-high 24 turnovers while adding 44 draw controls. On the offensive end, Corson leads the squad with 34 points, including 27 goals, while Trish Gillen has 13 assists.
Saturday's bout will mark just the second all-time meeting between Rowan and CNU. The Captains walked away with a 15-13 victory last year in Newport News. Guidi and Winters both landed hat-tricks for the victors, while Morrison had five points, including three assists.Â
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will cap off its five-game road trip with a 5 p.m. showdown at Lynchburg on April 13.
