NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Junior pitcher
Jamie Martin was honored Monday by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference, named the Pitcher of the Week for the fourth straight week by the league. The lefty from Lorton, Va., faced 15 batters on Sunday at Captains Park in the opening game of a doubleheader vs. Meredith College, and retired them all. The five-inning perfect game was the ninth in the 40-year history of the program, and the first ever for Martin.
For the day, Martin struck out 13 of the 15 Angels she retired, and really only needed her defense once. The game opened with a bunt that was fielded by Martin, who threw to first to record the out. The only other ball hit in play resulted in a fly out to open the fourth frame.
Martin is now 9-1 this season and has not allowed a run in her last 33 innings of pitching. She has lowered her earned run average to 0.84 and is just eight innings shy of the all-time school record of 41 consecutive scoreless innings pitched set by Michelle Kass-Prewitt. Martin's 13 strikeouts on Sunday give her 83 in 58 innings pitched this season, against just seven walks allowed.
The weekly award marks the sixth time this year in 11 weeks that Martin has received the honor. Teammate
Kate Alger has also been chosen Pitcher of the Week twice. Ironically, it was Alger who threw the last perfect game for the Captains, shutting down Roanoke last May in the NCAA Regional Final at Captains Park.Â
The Captains, now 26-5 on the year, end the regular season on Saturday at home with a doubleheader vs. top-ranked Salisbury. The Sea Gulls are 34-1 and have won 29 straight games. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at Captains Park.
