NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Celebrating his senior day with a dominating performance in both singles and doubles, Christopher Newport veteran
Tyler Hyun did not surrender a single game in helping lift the 38th-ranked Captains to a shutout victory against Marymount University on Sunday afternoon. The Captains improved to 11-6 overall this season with the win and closed out the home portion of the 2024 dual slate with a 9-2 record in Newport News.
A steady rain forced the teams indoors and the two former conference foes agreed to play all nine matches in the eight-game pro-set format. The match quickly favored the Captains after a doubles sweep and CNU promptly clinched the win in singles play shortly thereafter.
Hyun highlighted the action in his final home regular season match. The four-year Captain paired up with
Ryan Monroe at No. 3 doubles for his first doubles showing of the season. After pairing with
Gus Mitchell for a 2-1 record on the tournament circuit in the fall, Hyun wrapped up his senior day with a shutout win, 8-0, in his only dual appearance of the year.
In singles, he added another impressive 8-0 win at No. 5 to capture his sixth singles win of the year. He defeated David Zeiler to earn the multi-win day, marking the first of his career.
Also picking up two wins in the shutout victory were
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen,
Ashton Legum, Monroe, and
Alex Seretis. In doubles, Porsmyr Hansen and Legum paired up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 against Nicolas Stromberg and Eshan Degamwar. At No. 2, Seretis matched up with
Ahun Vodela for an 8-3 win against Zeiler and Adam Stanulis.
In singles, no CNU player gave up more than four games in the pro-set format with Monroe joining Hyun as Captains to collect flawless victories. Monroe played at No. 3 and earned his 8-0 win against Jose Torrecillas. CNU won, 8-2, at both No. 1 and No. 2 where Porsmyr Hansen took down Stromberg and Legum defeated Degamwar, respectively. At No. 4, Seretis captured the win against Stanulis, 8-3, and
Gus Mitchell stepped in at No. 6 for an 8-4 win against Nethaniel Tesfaye.
Christopher Newport will close out the regular season this week with a trip to Virginia Wesleyan University, ranked No. 44 in the nation, on Saturday, April 27. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 pm against the Marlins.
