FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- After piecing together a pair of historic efforts for the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team over the weekend,
Syd Guidi and
Kelsey Winters swept the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards, which were announced by the league office on Monday morning.
Winters was named the Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after previously earning the recognition on March 25. Overall, it marks her 10th career award, making her just the 10th student-athlete in any sport in Christopher Newport history to earn at least 10 weekly honors.
Meanwhile, Guidi was celebrated as the Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. However, she was previously named the Offensive Player of the Week on April 10, 2023. With her two awards, she joined former legend Kelly Lane and current teammate
Brookelyn Morrison as the only lacrosse players in CNU history to earn both an Offensive and Defensive honor.
During the team's lone appearance last week, Winters rewrote the record books while leading Christopher Newport to a 19-4 win at Lynchburg. Against the Hornets, she registered nine points after finishing with seven assists and a pair of goals. Her seven helpers equaled the seventh-highest total in program history.
With her work on Saturday, Winters established a new Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference record for career points after wrapping up the day with 390. That eclipsed the previous standard of 386, which was set by Mary Washington's Catherine Kennedy from 2009-12. It also equaled the 20th-most in Division III history.
Leading the Captains to an early advantage against Lynchburg, Winters did most of her damage in the first quarter as the fifth-year phenom had a goal and five assists in the first 15 minutes of action. Later, she polished off her historic appearance with two more helpers before landing the final blow of the contest with a goal in the fourth quarter.
Orchestrating her own historic appearance against the Hornets, Guidi starred on the draw while dominating possession during the lopsided triumph. Keeping the ball away from the high-powered Lynchburg attack, she collected 14 draw controls, which tied the single-game school record.
As Christopher Newport built a 13-goal halftime lead, she secured eight draws in the first two periods, including six in the opening quarter. After the break, she was even more successful in the second half. Of the game's eight draw controls over the final two frames, Guidi walked away with six of them. She also forced a turnover and snatched a ground ball in the third period to silence the Hornets.
In addition to her work on the draw, Guidi also chipped in with four goals on just five shots. That was her seventh consecutive hat-trick, marking the longest streak of her career.
So far this season, Winters leads the NCAA with 59 assists, while her 77 points place her 13th on the national charts. Meanwhile, Guidi is fourth in the league with 42 draw controls and third with 46 goals.
Guidi, Winters, and the rest of their teammates will return to action on Saturday when the Captains host Mary Washington at 3 p.m.
