SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- In a matchup against nationally-ranked Swarthmore College on the road, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team came away with a singles split while falling to the Garnet, 6-3. The Captains fell to 9-5 overall while Swarthmore improved to 16-1 this season.
A doubles sweep for the home team proved to be the difference as Christopher Newport managed three singles wins on Saturday. CNU won at lines 3, 4, and 5 as
Nesh Kumaresan,
Ryan Monroe, and
Ashton Legum pulled out team points for the Captains.
First, it was Legum getting the Captains on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 against Rushil Patel. Then,
Nesh Kumaresan finished out his three-setter against Kevin Jiang at No. 3 with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 win. Finally, Monroe downed Winston Zhang in the closest matchup of the day. The Captains sophomore battled back for a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 10-4 win to close out the day.
In another close match,
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen won the first set in a tiebreaker before falling at No. 2 against Max Lindstrom by a final count of 6-7, 6-2, 10-6.
The closest doubles match of the afternoon came when CNU nearly connected on a win at No. 3 doubles behind
Ahun Vodela and
Alex Seretis. The Captains tandem suffered an 8-6 loss to Lindstrom and Aadhi Raja as Swarthmore held on for the doubles sweep.
Christopher Newport will close out the weekend on Sunday at No. 17 Johns Hopkins with the match time scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
