BALTIMORE, Md. -- Led by a two-win performance from sophomore
Vincent Truong, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team competed hard against the 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, but ultimately fell by a final score of 6-3. Truong won at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles, earning a hard-fought win against regionally-ranked Daniel Ardila.
The Captains were facing their second-straight top-20 opponent on the road when they faced off against the perennial power in Johns Hopkins. In doubles, the Captains earned a single point when Truong paired with
Nesh Kumaresan at No. 2 against Ardila and George Jiang. The CNU pair earned an 8-5 win to get the Captains on the board heading into singles trailing 2-1.
In singles play,
Ashton Legum earned a straight-set win at No. 5 against Marco Azar (7-5, 6-3), capping a strong overall week for the veteran. Then, at No. 1, closing out the match in thrilling fashion, Truong pulled away from Ardila in the third-set tiebreaker to capture a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) win.
The other singles matches were won by the home team as
Alex Seretis was fended off by Pranav Gadiraju at No. 6 in a 6-3, 6-4 final after Chakor Rajendra downed
Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and No. 2, Hanyu Liu, defeated Kumaresan at No. 3, and Allen Gong earned a win over
Ryan Monroe at No. 4.
Christopher Newport will return to action this weekend as they host No. 38 Salisbury University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 before welcoming in Marymount University for as Noon match on Sunday, April 21.
