NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 15th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will kick off a five-game homestand on Sunday at noon when the Captains welcome Rhodes to Jennings Family Stadium for a non-conference showdown.
Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 4-1 on the season, including 2-0 at home. Meanwhile, Rhodes is 1-2 overall.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the schedule page.
Christopher Newport is coming off of its third victory over a nationally-ranked opponent this season. On Tuesday during the squad's Spring Break trip to Clearwater, Florida, the Captains knocked off No. 19 St. John Fisher, 10-9. Against the Cardinals,
Hope Hunter collected a career-high five points, including her second hat-trick of the season. She also had a hand in each of CNU's first four goals as the squad erased an early 3-1 deficit on the way to the win.
Along with Hunter,
Eleanor Collins collected her 100th career draw, becoming the 15th player in program history to reach that milestone.
Brookelyn Morrison also added a game-high eight draw controls against St. John Fisher as the Captains secured 14 of the game's 21 battles. Incredibly, that performance came against a team that led the NCAA in draw control percentage last year and returned the vast majority of its leading performers from 2023.
On the defensive side,
Madi Rozgonyi led Christopher Newport with a pair of takeaways, while
Hadley Chadwick pocketed five saves. The victory was Chadwick's fourth career triumph against a top-25 opponent, tying former standout Becca Creekmore for the most in program history.
So far this season,
Kelsey Winters ranks 12th in the country with 12 assists, including four in her appearance against St. John Fisher. In her career, she now has 215 helpers, which ranks eighth on the all-time Division III charts and 18th among all levels of collegiate lacrosse. She is one shy of matching Allegheny's McKenzie Bell for seventh in Division III lore and 17th in NCAA history.
Along with Winters,
Julia Iapicca currently sits 35th in the country with 19 goals this season, while the team ranks in the top-40 nationally in both clearing percentage (.882) and free-position percentage (.571). The team sank four eight-meter shots against St. John Fisher on Tuesday, marking the second-highest total of the year. The Captains landed five in the season opener during a 12-10 win at No. 7 Washington & Lee.
Rhodes has opened the 2024 campaign with three straight road tilts, including a pair in Claremont, California last week. During their trip to the Golden State, the Lynx knocked off Colorado College, 18-16, in a neutral-site tilt before dropping a 13-4 decision against No. 12 Pomona Pitzer.
A year after making a run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Rhodes has already received strong contributions from the veteran portion of its roster. Seniors Avery Burke and Chloe Parker both have seven goals apiece, while sophomore Caroline Kardian has a team-high four assists. Karidian also ranks among the national leaders in draw controls-per-game with a 6.67 average.
Defensively, Bari Pinkett leads the Lynx with five caused turnovers, while Olivia Wood has a .391 save percentage and 14.00 goals-against-average.
Sunday's contest will be the first ever match-up between Rhodes and CNU.
After this weekend, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a 5 p.m. battle with Widener on Wednesday.
